MDHL Shines as Yale beats UMass-Lowell to reach National Championship

Andrew Miller scores the overtime winner against Connor Hellebuyck to send Yale to the National Championship

The MDHL took center stage Thursday night as Yale clipped UMass Lowell in overtime to send the Bulldogs to the National Championship.

Yale captain, MDHL alumnus, and former Cranbrook Crane Andrew Miller scored on a breakaway 6:59 into the first overtime and ended the terrific season had by UMass Lowell. Yale coach Keith Allain said, "That's probably the biggest goal in the history of Yale hockey."

The man he scored against, Big East Tourney MVP goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, also played in the MDHL and at Walled Lake Northern. Despite the loss, however, Hellebuyck played extremely well. He stopped 44 of the 47 shots that came his way, and kept his team in the game. UMass Lowell only registered 18 shots of their own.

Yale also sports two other MDHL alumni in Clinton Bourbonais (Orchard Lake St. Mary's) and Ryan Obuchowski (Detroit Catholic Central). The Bulldogs will play Quinnipiac in the Championship game tonight at 7pm.
