TOPEKA, Kan. – The Topeka RoadRunners announced Thursday that forward Max Harper has committed to enroll and play Div. 1 hockey at Air Force Academy this fall.
Harper, a 6-3 power forward from Rochester Hills, Mich., joined the RoadRunners two seasons ago after playing for three years at Rochester United High School.
“First of all, I’d like to thank my teammates and coaching staff here in Topeka for helping me develop – both mentally and physically,” said Harper. “Making the transition from high school hockey to junior hockey takes time, and my experience with the staff in Topeka will help me with my next transition at Air Force. People have been good to me here and I feel fortunate for what’s in front of me.”
Harper, a 20-year-old in his second season in a RoadRunner uniform, is on pace to nearly double his point production from his rookie season, which included 26 points in 58 games. To date, Harper has 25 points in 35 games.
“Playing in this division (NAHL South) has been the best thing for me,” said Harper. “It’s such a competitive and tough division. Everyone is good, and there are no nights off. When you think about it, it’s the best way to get better and develop.”
Harper’s progression has been steady, according to Topeka Head Coach Josh Kamrass.
“Max is a great story,” said Kamrass. “He came in here as a shy kid, and has turned into a very self-confident young man. Air Force is getting a class act, and we are proud of him. On the ice, he has figured things out and we think he will continue to grow as a player. His ceiling is pretty high.”
Harper’s high school career was filled with numerous awards, both for his play on the ice and his work in the classroom. He was a two-time First Team All State member, as well as All-State Academic his senior year. He finished at Rochester United with 166 points in only 73 games.
